In 5M we are promoting the idea of Growth Mindset, the notion that all students can maximize their potential by believing that they will improve through practice, listening to instruction, giving their best effort, and viewing mistakes as learning opportunities. Setbacks and obstacles are seen as a normal part of the learning process. Perseverance and hard work are valued much more than intelligence.
A person with a Fixed Mindset is someone who is closed to new learning, gives up easily, and believes that improvement is not possible. They believe that someone is just "Born Smart" and that's that. Some people are just good at things and others are not.
