Did you know that mapping has a lot to do with Math? Well, it does! Maps use coordinates, scale and measurement. In 5M we made maps with a written set of instructions, maps with coordinates and Battleship game boards using coordinates! Great fun to combine Math and Social Studies!

Our Partnership With Southwest University
Did you know that West Gate Public School has a partnership with Southwest University in Chongqing, China? We do!
Each year, Southwest University sends us student-teachers to come and experience what teaching and learning is like here in Canada and to gather expertise and share ideas. This year, Mrs. Laforet, our Principal, had an opportunity to do the same by spending 10 days in China! When she came back she told us all about it!
5M would like to thank our Chinese student-teachers for their hard work, generosity and friendship. All the best in your teaching careers!

Community Cleanup!
For Earth Day 2016, 5M and West Gate participated in a Community Cleanup. Each of the Junior and Intermediate classes had a designated area in which to collect trash and recyclables. The students in 5M did an exemplary and respectful job of walking through the neighbourhoods cleaning up as they went. We collected several bags of trash. Way to go 5M!
Eco Assembly!
The Eco Assembly was the responsibility of the Grade 5 students in 5M, 4/5L, and 5/6Q. For our presentation we sang a song, performed with actions, about keeping the earth clean called, "We're In It Together". We also had a special presentation on Reducing, Reusing and Recycling from Heather Taylor from Windsor Solid Waste Authority. We learned that we all have to do our part to make the world a better, cleaner place!
Special thanks to Hailey O. for being our MC for the assembly!

Math? No Problem!
2016 marks the first time in my 18 year career that all students in the class really enjoy math. Students in 5M are attentive, inquisitive and active in their participation during math time. During our mini-lessons, you can hear a pin drop as the students are focused on their learning. Math discussions are rich, with students never being afraid to make a mistake as mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities and not failures. Each and every day I'm excited to hear what 5M has to share about Math. The connections that they make to all strands and other subject matter is as thrilling as it is intriguing. Amazing!
